The Institute It was designed as a unit within the structure of the Yakutalmaz group of enterprises, closely connected with its head entity.

The Institute has traditionally been developing in three main areas — scientific research, design and engineering, and economic research and planning. Research is closely linked with the objectives and the needs of diamond production, the most important being the maintenance of its resource base and ensuring the efficient recovery of diamonds.

Today the Institute is involved in all spheres of the economy of Western Yakutia.

Yakutniproalmaz consists of 50 scientific and design units. Over 220 people are employed in various design projects, and 200 people are involved in scientific research, of these 62 are researchers and managers.

The bulk of research and design works is performed by Yakutniproalmaz independently, but some works and services are subcontracted to a number of scientific and design companies. Among the main subcontractors there are the Institute of Comprehensive Exploitation of Mineral Resources of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), Moscow State Mining University, the Scientific Research Institute of Mining Geo-mechanics and Mine Surveying — Interdisciplinary Research Center VNIMI, Gipronickel Institute, Giproruda Institute, Novotech Research and Development Center, the Institute of Mining (IM SB RAS) and Yakut Scientific Center Institutes.

The Institute acts as the general designer, and is the coordinator and generator of projects. The Institute created unique projects for the development of the Mir, Aikhal and Udachnaya kimberlite pipes, and for the construction and operation of the world’s largest Processing Plants — No. 12 and No. 14.

In recent years, the Institute has taken part in the development of diamond mining projects in Russia's Arkhangelsk Region, and the Republic of Angola.
