Mirny Mining and Processing Division (MPD) was founded in 1957 and is the oldest division of ALROSA. Share in ALROSA Group’s production totaled 21% in 2016.

Mirny MPD is developing the following deposits: Mir and International kimberlite pipes, Vodorazdelnye Galechniki, Irelyakh and Gornoye placer deposits, and Tailings of Processing Plant No. 5 (technogenic deposit).

The division employs more than 3,800 people.

International underground mine

ALROSA’s first underground mine. Since 1999 it has been operating at the International kimberlite pipe which is characterized by very high diamond content in ore (more than 8 carats per ton). According to the JORC Code, reserves of the International mine are enough to maintain production until 2022 mining 500,000 tons of ore per year.

Diamond output in 2016 – 3.9 million carats.

Mir underground mine

This mine has been in operation since 2009. Diamond content of the pipe is high and the average diamond grade exceeds 3 carats per ton. According to the JORC Code, the Mir mine reserves are sufficient to continue mining with a design capacity of 1 mn tonnes of ore per year until 2043.

Current capacity of the mine is 500,000 tonnes of ore per year. The relevant measures are being taken to enable the mine to reach the design capacity.

Diamond output in 2016 – 3.19 million carats.

Alluvial and technogenic deposits

Except primary deposits Mirny MPD also includes such alluvials as Vodorazdelnye Galechniki, Irelyakh and Gornoye, and one technogenic deposit – Tailings of Processing Plant No. 5.

Diamond output in 2016 – 669 thousand carats.

Ore and sands processing

The kimberlites extracted from the Mir and International mines as well as sands from placer deposits are processed at Processing Plant No. 3, which has a design capacity of 2 million tons of ore per year. In 1970s, the plant was a flagman of Russia’s diamond mining industry. Today the equipment of this plant successfully process a variety of raw materials – from the primary deposits’ ore to the alluvials and technogenic reserves.

A special feature of Mirny MPD is that it is the only one in the Russian Federation and in ALROSA, with a dredge fleet, represented by dredges No. 201, 202, 203. These floating processing plants move along the riverbed of the Irelyakh River lifting up tons of diamond sands and gravels from its bottom, and carry out their primary processing work.
