On Wednesday, August 23, ALROSA President Sergey Ivanov visited Internatsionalny underground mine of Mirny Mining and Processing Division. He inspected conditions for underground works and functioning of the sewerage system, discussed industrial safety issues with the management and staff of the mine.
Sergey Ivanov and acting head of Internatsionalny underground mine Denis Cherentaev inspected the main production machinery of the underground section of the mine. They paid particular attention to the functioning of the water drainage system, in particular, the drainage pumping station and two water sumps. He also discussed the issues of underground works safety with the miners.
Sergey Ivanov also discussed with the management of Internatsionalny mine the possibility of employing workers from Mir underground mine. According to Denis Cherentaev, a blind skip shaft will be put into operation at Internatsionalny underground mine early in October. To maintain it on a permanent basis, it is planned to engage at least 40 workers and engineers from Mir underground mine.
A visit to Internatsionalny underground mine was scheduled as part of a general inspection of all the Company’s underground mines initiated by ALROSA’s management after the accident at Mir underground mine. By September 1, 2017, a special purpose expert group must conduct a comprehensive safety assessment of mining operations at the Company’s underground mines. The main aim is to assess the possible impact of water bodies on mine workings and measures taken to prevent water breakthrough from depleted open pit mines.
Internatsionalny underground mine is located 16 km south-west of the town of Mirny. It was put into operation in 1999 to develop Internatsionalnoe deposit that is characterized by a high diamond content in ore. Mining is expected to be completed by 2033.
Apart from Mir and Internatsionalny, ALROSA is developing Aikhal and Udachny underground mines.}
